Tarapacá Estate
The Natural
Closof the Maipo
Valley
More than 15 million years ago, rugged hills formed a natural clos around a unique portion of land in the Maipo Valley, creating a one-of-a-kind mesoclimate.

The Maipo River then began to flow through the area with significant force, wearing away the northern part of the clos, exposing a spectacular sight: the Viña Tarapacá.

Of the 2,600 total hectares, we have planted and developed 600 hectares, truly amazed by the exceptional characteristics that the encircling wall of hills provides.

373 Soil Pits: A
Comprehensive
Exploration
In an unprecedented study due to its scope and nature, we mapped 712 hectares and dug and analyzed 373 soil pits throughout the vineyard.

Our wines are planted principally in soils with a water storage capacity between 100 and 110 mm/10cm. This allows the vineyards to maintain a good humidity, therefore allowing us to maintain a healthy balance among our vines' canopy.

Piedmont
Perfect for producing Gran Reserva quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, Piedmont is one of Tarapacá's prized soils. Found anywhere from 3 to 20 degrees along the estate's slopes, this mineral rich soil is the result of time slowly eroding away the Aculeo Hill. Considering its texture and an abundance of angular stones, the vines' roots are able to explore freely, resulting in wines with good acidity, length and rich tannins. The name Piedmont refers to soils from foothills.

Terrain
The Natural
Clos
Just as the walls of a clos protect a vineyard's terroir, this unique surrounding landscape forms a natural clos. Walled in by nature, our slopes soak up long luminous days and have better water drainage, lower yields and high potential soils along the slopes allows for unique expression and quality wines.

3
Terrain
A Luminous
Terrain
At -33.77 Latitude with a northwestern orientation, Viña Tarapacá enjoys long luminous days during the vines' entire active period. This ensures that each plant's entire cycle fully develops, resulting in aromatic wines with deep coloring.

3
Terrain
The
Walls
Entirely unique to the Maipo Valley, this natural clos protects our vineyards and provides prized slopes. With gravelly soils, the slopes experience better water drainage and lower yields. The vines' roots are forced to dig down deep to find mineral rich soils from the walls' ancient past. All this allows us to have more control over the vines' development.

Climate
A Marked
Mesoclimate
With clockwork winds and the Maipo River's cool waters contouring the northern edge of our vineyards, the Viña Tarapacá maintains quite a unique mesoclimate within the Maipo Valley. These factors keep the valley's high summer temperatures several degrees cooler in Tarapacá, allowing for a slower grape maturation.

4
Climate
Clockwork
Winds
Viña Tarapacá is quite unique in that the moderating winds are as predictable as the sun, keeping vineyard temperatures fresh and ensuring the grapes maintain good acidity levels with a slow maturation. The winds also help in avoiding frost damage, though rarely a threat. Never strong enough to damage the vines, the winds are just one more addition to the Viña Tarapacá's uniqueness.
  • AM
  • PM
Every morning around 10 a.m., a warm breeze flows down from the Andes Mountains. As it crosses over the Maipo River's cool waters, it enters into Tarapacá and the vines enjoy a nice mid-morning refresh.
Standing on the Mirador Hill around 4 p.m., one can feel the hair on their head begin to tousle as a cool Pacific breeze begins to flow over our natural clos and lower the Viña Tarapacá's temperatures.

4
Climate
The Moderating
Maipo River
Originating at the base of the Maipo Volcano in the Andes Mountains, the Maipo River is principally glacial runoff. On its 250-kilometer journey to the Pacific Ocean, the Maipo's cool waters border the Viña Tarapacá, chilling all winds before they breeze through the vineyards.

5
BIODIVERSITY
Rich in Diversity
and Life
Viña Tarapacá's surrounding hills are thriving with endemic, native and introduced flora and fauna. Being situated in one of the 35 Biodiversity Hotspots—a region with significant levels of biodiversity that is under threat from humans—we are working hard to conserve our more than 2,000 hectares of native forest surrounding the vineyards and contribute to the protection of the Earth.

5
BIODIVERSITY
Wines to the
Rhythm of Nature
Partnering with the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity and Universidad Austral de Chile, Viña Tarapacá implemented practices of the Wine, Climate Change and Biodiversity Program, which focuses on the preservation and restoration of native flora and fauna, promoting a healthy ecosystem. This has positively affected our wines in various ways.
  • Native Microbiology
  • Soil Fertility
  • Natural Pest Control
  • Climate Regulation
Native Microbiology The surrounding forest's native yeasts are also shared within our vineyard, giving our wines varietal aromas and a unique bouquet. This creates wines with one-of-a-kind organoleptic properties.

BIODIVERSITY
Biological
Corridors
Key to biodiversity conservation, we have developed a master plan to restore ravines and create major biological corridors that will connect the hills to the vineyards and strengthen our natural clos' protecting walls. Native flora and fauna greatly influence our terroirs, and this plan will further give unique identity to our wines.

Mirador, Mansel and Piedmont

This Blend perfectly combines the different soils of the Tarapacá farm. First, the “El Mirador” (Cabernet Sauvignon) soil series is characterized by its minerality and the presence of corner stones and gravel, giving the wine a tasty, balanced and long palate. Second, the “Piedmont” soil series (Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) has a very important gravel matrix and good quality of clays, which translates into very good-bodied and mature wines. Lastly, the “Mansel” series. Of volcanic origin, with a sandy clay loam to clayey texture. Ideal for the production of Gran Reserva quality Syrah, "Mansel" is a soil with high potential, which has an abundance of red clay providing wines with body, great concentration and ripe tannins.

Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Syrah 13%, and Cabernet Franc 12%

D.O: Maipo Valley

Yield: 1.0 to 1.2 kgs per plant

Climate: This blend comes from northern facing vineyards that are planted from east to west. High luminosity and cool evening breezes, as well as the Maipo River's cool waters help moderate the day's high temperatures. Nighttime temperatures can drop up to 20ºC from the day's high.

Winemaker's Notes

This blend is the perfect combination of the Viña Tarapacá's climate and soil. The Cabernet Sauvignon contributes red fruit aromas such as raspberry and cherry that add to the wine's freshness, as well as notes of tobacco, plum and cassis. The Syrah, coming from an area close to the Maipo River, contributes aromas of blackberry and black cherry with floral notes and subtle hints of black olive. The Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mirador series gives a sharp mouth with similar flavors as aromas, thanks to sandy soils with angular stones and gravels. Smooth and balanced with a great finish due to volcanic mineral soils. The Syrah adds body and minerality. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, located in the Piedmont series give volume and ripeness.

The mesoclimate where the vineyard that originates this wine is located, has a high luminosity during the day and has a cool breeze that helps to moderate the high temperatures in the afternoon. During the night, the day-night thermal differential can be up to 22 ºC. It is also highly influenced by the cool morning and afternoon breezes, as well as the cold waters of the Maipo River.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Ruby red in color with violet hues. Nose: There are red and black fruits such as plum, blackberry from the Cabernet Sauvginon and Carmenère strains. We can also find spices with subtle and elegant toasted touches of the wood. Mouth: On the palate it is a juicy, structured wine with soft tannins that leads to a silky finish.
