March 2013 – Ed Flaherty, Viña Tarapacá’s Chief Winemaker, recently returned from a successful tour of the United States and Canada. The tour consisted of a series of events with specialized press, wine industry professionals, and regional distributors.
On February 19th, a seminar and tasting took place in the Puro Chile store, located in New York City. The fifty or so people in attendance listened attentively to the presentation, and then, accompanied by the winemaker, tasted the following wines:
– 2012 Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc, Leyda Valley
– 2012 Gran Reserva Pinot Noir, Leyda Valley
– 2011 Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Maipo Valley
– 2010 Gran Reserva Etiqueta Negra Cabernet Sauvignon, Maipo Valley
– 2010 Tarapacá Plus, Red Blend, Maipo Valley
– 2010 Tara.Pakay, Maipo Valley
The participants categorically praised the quality of the wines and emphasized the informative nature of the presentation, judging the event as a “great success.”
After the presentation, Flaherty met with Michael Schachner, editor of Wine Enthusiast magazine.
They tasted an array of wines from the winery and shared opinions. Of all the samples tasted, Shachner particularly highlighted the 2012 Gran Tarapacá Sauvignon Blanc, calling it “One of the best Sauvignon Blancs that I have tasted from the 2012 harvest”. To conclude the North American tour, the winemaker then traveled to Canada to meet with several regional importers.
